Hello iamsolemn,

I was wondering whether psychiatry has some of the elements of psychology like consoling patients and building relationships with them. Also, how stressful is psychology/psychiatry and how much free time do you guys have on average.

Thanks!

I have no free time but I also have a 10-month old, so there may be some confounding variables.

Stress is very variable, depends on your life situation, work setting, personality, how much you want to workm and where you want to work. Your best bet is to find someone that does the job you are interested in and talk to them of observe a typical day.

Psychiatrists are primarily trained in psychopharmacological treatments but also receive training in psychological interventions, which can very depending on program and trainee's interests. Most psychiatry jobs concentrate on med management but in private practice you can concentrate on therapy with the proper training. But you said go over to the psychiatry forum to get a more detailed and informed answer.

Quite a difference between psychology and psychiatry. Yes, building rapport and using therapeutic skills is used in psychiatry. Psychiatry also utilizes many forms of psychotherapy. But the concentration is on pharmacological interventions.
