Hey guys,
Just wanted to get some input from you guys. I have heard a lot about this field. Can anyone tell me if there is a demand of a Consuliazon( think that is the spelling). I have heard that it is the most stable steady of all the psych jobs out there.

I am really interested in child psych. Can you do the consult work and still build a outside practice?
Thanks

I don't have any solid numbers and most of the following info I heard is anecdotal.

From what I've heard from my program's attendings, except for Forensic & Child Psychiatry, other fellowships will not really make you a more attractive candidate for a position, nor earn you extra money.

Child supposedly will earn you around an extra $50,000 a year
Forensics is highly variable, but supposedly earns more than that.

Having done several consults myself, I don't see much area in this field that you would not already just get in a regular residency. I could of course be wrong, and perhaps had I actually experienced a fellowship in consults--I could be proven wrong on this opinion. Anyone with more information to share to correct me, please offer any.

As for demand--and again this is anecdotal from attendings in my program--there is a strong demand for psychiatric consultants, but they don't really care or hold out for people with fellowship training.

I could see psychosomatic medicine getting particularly interesting if the psychiatrist were to actually try to psychotherapeutically treat a psychosomatic d.o., e.g. tx conversion d.o. Unfortunately, because of managed care, this seldom seems to be the case.

The head of the Psychiatry Dept at Cooper Hosptial in Camden NJ is considered an expert in Conversion DO-Dr. Newmark. He uses amital interviews to diagnose the disorder. This is where consults in psychiatry really get interesting and would warrant fellowship experience IMHO.

for C/L you should know more med, surgery, etc. than ur avg psychiatrist. u deal with a lot of med/psych issues.

It's "Consult/Liason," now formally referred to as psychosomatic medicine.

Check out the Psychiatry fellowship sticky at the top of the psychiatry forum.

All fields of psychiatry are stable and have increased growth potential. This includes general adult, child, forensic, addiction psych., and psychosomatics.
