My guess would be no. I think Chemistry, Biology, and Physics count as sciences.

For the most part, no. However, I'm pretty sure that I got things to count such as Research Methods (math), Cognition (Biology), and I think maybe even Abnormal psych counted, too. Anything behavioral neurobiology, psychobiology, etc. will count.

The above does not apply, in any case, to TMDSAS.

if the psych credits are under biology or under the bio and psychology department..
then.. its worth a shot to try it as bcpm

the day psych classes counted for bcpm..
it'd be a good day..

I'm planning to put my biopsychology and statistical principles of psychology classes as biology and math, respectively. They're in the psychology department at my school, but the amcas instructions say that "each course must be assigned a course classification based entirely on the primary content of the course." And I believe these classes definitely comprise of >50% what would be considered BCPM material.

If neuropsych=sciences, then man my sGPA should be WAY higher than it is now.

Yes. In fact, anything that has neuro, bio, or any other prefix or suffix, irrespective of what discipline it is in, will count 95% of the time. Again, this does not apply to TMDSAS.

Like I said, both Cognition and Abnormal Psych counted, for me at least. Remember that these are being overlooked by a human, and not a computer, so it's well within the realm of possibility that one person will allow Cognitive Psychology to count, while another person won't.

I can't promise this, but if you take it and they cover some of the neuropathology, I'd certainly roll the dice and list it.

abnormal psych = clinical psych, right?

I didn't know that would count under sGPA either.. but I'd be surprised if neuropsych, biological psych didn't count.. =\

by that thought process intro to psych had a lot of cognitive biology and the nature v.s nurture debate being a big topic..

i think really all sciences should count.

theres a very mitigated line between neuroscience and psychology...

There is also a thin line between "can't read" and "illiterate"

"Everything else below is NON-BCPM.

Behavioral & Social Sciences (BESS)
1.Anthropology
2.Economics
3.Family Studies
4.Psychology
5.Sociology"

I think physical anthropology should be considered a science.

Neuroscience studies biochemistry. Psychology studies behavior and motivation for behavior.

The relation is akin to that of biology and chemistry. They're correlated in a lot of ways, but they are their own individual fields of study.

cough.. look north.. to bcpm zone... cough.. neuroscience cough...
cough... what ...cough.. what is the difference between a psychology course which places emphasis on the biologic aspects of human behavior and neuroscience..
get what im saying?
i mean frankly any psychology which provides information for the nature portion of psychology over the nurture in my mind is neuroscience or at least biology...
next time it'd be nicer to ask what i meant instead of being so rude 😛

Agree. Love it.

true story right?

topics covered in lower division/upper division physical anthro classes:

evolution/natural selection
evolutionary systematics/classification
dna replication/cell division
genetics, emphasis on population genetics
history of scientists/development of theory of evolution
human variation
skeletal biology
anatomy
primatology
morphology
I could go on but I digress...

You took that like a champ! 😛 Sorry, I couldn't help it. My dog had JUST urinated on the carpet, and I needed to vent, badly. But my point was valid, and I DO understand your dilemma.

its alright lol.. and yah.. that might make me a bit unhappy too..

My grandfather just died an hour and a half ago. Will I be pardoned if I rip you a new one for acting like jackass and then using an excuse like "my dog took a leak on the carpet"?

lmao.. i'll laugh if i actually know you..
and you remind me.. of this one kid in my chem class..

Oh em gee. That last sentence gave me goosebumps. There goes anonymity. BUT hey, look on the bright side. At least you will know my alter ego online. Let me ask; do you go to UMD? tun tun tun. 😱

Well, maybe. Depends on mode of death. Myocardial infarction or something else. Hehe. I kid. But go ahead, take your best shot.

nah ahha..
i could have.. but.. i decided to skip 12th grade like a month before school ended lol.. so i got stuck going to mc. its not that bad.. except we dont have a +, - system.. which blows my chem life. no curve and 87.4% and she wont even attempt to consider anything. -.-
but yah umd secretly scares me.. 300+ per class..

Oh you lucky duck. You know, having no +/- is better than having one. Because while AMCAS counts it, UMD doesn't! It is so pointless. Also, CHEM labs here are horrifying. You spend 15 hours a week on a lab, and still phail. AHHH. But its ok, life goes on.

realistically.. i detest labs...
i could easily survive without it..
i had lab on friday too boot.. and all our tests were wends.. so i could have easily lived without it..

and i would still take the +,- system..
having a B in chem.. where i was in the top 5 students in my class of 40.. 10 droped out i think..
and no curve... where most people literally left the class with a D in lecture and only managed a C cuz of lab...
ugh.. im displeased.. American university here i come.. or w.e undergrad..

Whatever you do, dont choose GW. Waste of money. UMD is not that bad if you don't take CHEM labs.

i was debating double majoring in psych and forensic science and working for the gov for 2 years.. full ride at GW in exchange..
good bases for a possibility in forensic medicine i thought..
but i doubt i'd take it.. because it'll put me too behind..

but yah.. GW has some kick ass dorms..

got any opinions about hood college.. other then it having a horrible name lol..

To clarify, abnormal psych or psychopathology can be an extremely difficult course. At some schools, it may be of moderate difficult (I've never heard someone call it "easy"). At my UG, it was on par with my 400-level Human Physiology course, so don't assume it will be an "easy A."

abnormal psychology is on par with social/psych of personality in my state.
all of which are 'supposedly' easier then intro psych or so says my psych teacher who has a ph.d in social psych..

Well, that actually sounds like a good deal, as far as the financial situation. I mean while they might be expensive, they are also generous; I remember when I went there for the Science Olympiad a few years ago, they offered everyone there a full ride! Back then, I balked at the Dean and thought "Harvard is where I'm headed" But, reality catches up in the end. But as far as getting behind, that is also true. And Hood college, lol. TBH, never heard of it before. Ignorance is bliss. 😀

hood college is a tier 1 former womens college turned liberal arts school..
its in frederick i'd go there if it werent for the name..
GW i think is very generous in its programs, but its a school which you should go to if you want a job with the government..
but then again my psych teacher went to GW for undergrad and she turned out to be amazing haha... so maybe if i go to GW i can be as cool as her lol...

but yah.. the minute GW pushes a psych scholarship haha.. im on board lol

Your social and personality psych courses are integrated?! wtf.... They're like polar opposite fields.

I wouldn't want a social class at the level of a gen psych course... it'd be pretty lame. My social class was a lot of fun but it wasn't exactly a GPA booster for most people.

Anyway, I was simply warning that poster not to just assume abnormal would be easy since it can be a very difficult course if it's taught well. In my abnormal class we had to learn all of the d/os, their diagnostic criteria, known and suspected causes (both biological/neurologic and psychogenic), and treatments in various psychological and medical modalities (incl. integrations of medical and psychotherapeutic treatments) as well as various other features of each disorder. Then on exams (which were cumulative), he would give us a series of case studies and ask us to give a 5-axis differential diagnosis (including a GAF score +/- 10 from what he would consider the pt), prove our diagnosis, create a treatment plan using a given modality (he would typically pick the modality for us, so we had to know all of them), and then answer a series of questions about the disorder (typically etiological questions, medical questions, common comorbidities, common populations effected, etc.). The questions were all essay/free answer and the average in the course was always a C with typically 1 A and 1-2 A-s in a class of 50.

Does regular statistics count as Math? Even if it's listed under Statistics in the course catalog. Ex: Statistics 226.

there not integrated so to speak.. but the same teacher teaches all 3.. like intro is a 100 course, but social and personal are both 200's and again my teacher says there basically pretty much fun and relatively easier then intro because they are more concentrated rather then spread out.
they all have a lot of aspects together..
but yes..
psychology of personality SHOULD be BCPM for sure

I lold.

Hey all I just have a quick question. Does Psychology count as a science class or no? Does it factor into your sGPA?

Short answer: no.
Long answer: it depends. if, for example, your school offers neuroscience courses through the psychology department, then you could potentially list these as bio classes, as neuroscience does count as biology under AMCAS standards. If AMCAS disagrees, they will simply re-list the class in question as psychology.
