Hello everyone,

I am at a practicum site that does psychosexual evaluations (amongst other things) and I am not too familiar with them. Just curious, does anyone have any experience with evaluations of sex offenders, children that are sexually acting out, etc? What has been your experience with this? Also, do you know of any good resources and references for these types of evaluations. Thanks!

I'm only familiar with the VASOR and that was years ago. It was used by the state's DOC to evaluate all convicted sex offenders. Provided a wealth of information across numerous domains.

I seem to recall Sexual Deviance (Laws & O'Donohue) being one book I used for references/resources but I can't remember the other one... 😡 The first one provides you with both background info for each offense and recommendations for assessment and treatment.

There a few instruments that I'm aware that are used with sex offenders. They are: the RSVP, SORAG, SONAR, RRASOR, SVR-20, and STATIC-99. These are all risk assessment measures though.

I conducted a few adult and juvenile sex offender evaluations as a practicum student a couple years back. I used the J-SOAP, ERASOR, STATIC-99, ACUTE-07, STABLE-07, and the Abel (the Abel is very old school, so I don't imagine many people continue to use this anymore). The most important piece of a sex offender evaluation is doing a very structured "sex offender"- specific interview.

Actually, the Able continues to be updated and they are currently on the 3rd edition of the Able Screen. I use that with clients when there is a question about whether or not there is a sexual interest in minors.

Thanks for the info! I was certified in giving the Able, but I felt like the majority of the internship interviews I had gave me the "why would anyone use this" look. Glad to know that people still use it!
