I'm thinking of pursuing a research career targeting psychosomatic issues and will likely go for a fellowship to help bolster research experience. Since residency obviously focuses on clinical work, I'm wondering if anyone here might know which areas in the field of psychosomatics need the most urgent research exploration at present. Thanks in advance!

Depends on your definition of psychosomatics. Pure mind/body stuff? Clinical issues facing CL docs? Either way, there's a ton of stuff that needs more work. Probably the most "urgent" issue in terms of epidemiologically broad and severe morbidity/mortality remains delirium. Prediction, prophylaxis, and management all remain difficult and/or controversial.

Good points. I guess I had in mind the issues facing CL docs, of which delirium did seem to be the big buzz word I'd been reading about. But I'm also very interested in mind-body topics, specifically exercise/yoga and body awareness. Over all I think I'm mainly trying to explore some ideas for more practical topics of investigation for the future. Thanks for your input either way.
