NYU's MA program is great if you want to later apply to doctoral programs. Although the curriculum does not stress research there are tons of research opportunities at NYU, NYU medical center, etc., if you take initiative. One of their research methods courses requires that you join a lab and complete a project which you can turn into your thesis, so you get class credit for working on your thesis. Also if you maintain a high GPA you can start taking doctoral courses, which would definitely be transferrable. The program is not funded, but class times are late in the day so you can work and go to school. I'm sure a lot of other MA programs are similar, I'm just sharing my experience.
