I attended my first physical therapy open house yesterday and just wanted to share my experience with other potential applicants this upcoming cycle about what an open house is like for those that have never gone to one.

It was at a school in North Canton, Ohio Walsh University. It is a small Catholic based university in a really nice surrounding community. We started with registration then we waited for others to show up at first there was about 10 people then by the time I knew it there was about 80 people. This is the university's first year using PTCAS so the number of applicants this cycle is likely to go up. Previously there had been about 150 qualified applicants for about 32 spots and they take the top 90 to interviews. After the registration we went on a brief tour of the PT department and I thought it was really nice. Facilities and equipment were top notch (the entire dept was recently remodeled) everything was close together in the same building no need to lug books around all over the place. Pretty much everything you need or will ever use in PT school including all of the professors offices was in the same building.

After the tour there was a brief intro to the school and PT program by the Chair of the PT division followed by a short Q & A about the program in general. It was really helpful to get a sense of what a program was like. After him the director of admissions spoke about what sets accepted students apart from the rest and how to make yourself standout as an applicant followed by another Q & A session which I found once again to be extremely helpful. The part I found to be the best was when all of the faculty left the room and we were free to ask current PT students enrolled in the program questions. After this you really get a feel for what it is like to be a PT student not just in this schools program but the overall experience for what it would be like at others. I would highly recommend to anyone if you have the time to attend a schools open house please do it! I learned a lot and found the entire experience to be very rewarding and it also increased my motivation. To get first hand information about life as a PT student was very rewarding and it was nice to see how much everyone enjoyed PT school up until this point. Despite the drastic change in course load from undergrad to grad school which is expected with the rigors of the program. I also liked that this small school had clinical affiliations with MLB teams, which I really liked because I definitely want to focus more on sports related PT.

Also, one other important note is that most of the faculty at this open house does the interviews for the PT program (not sure if it's like this at other schools) but just by meeting them and interacting with them you put a face to the name on your application when they go to review them so I did my best to try and introduce myself to everyone that was there and ask questions. Well to anyone that wanted to know what an open house was like there you go! If anyone else has any questions about it please ask and I will answer.

Care to share what was said here? If you remember that is! 🙂

Hello! I don't really have much to say, but thank you for the info on what to expect from open houses. I have not been to one yet, but hopefully will make it to some soon. The real reason I replied was because I live about 15 minutes away from there! Hey neighbor! (unless you traveled there for the open house?)

He said after they narrow down the potential applicants for the interview process initially ranked by GPA, Pre-Req GPA, and GRE scores they look for overall character. A few things he said that made an applicant stand out is reference letters and the interview. They look for someone who can work together in a group and who they feel who would best go on to represent the profession as a whole. GPA etc is important that it gets you to the interview portion then after that it's how you represent yourself during the interview and how good your references are. Also going over the required amount of observation hours plays a factor as well. Hope this helps!

I live about an hour away I've just never been to an open house and Walsh had one the soonest so I wanted to check it out. I was definitely impressed by their program. Do you plan on applying there?
