The question basically asks it all. I am a graduating senior with a BS in Health Science Studies. I have a 3.4 and want to take a year off for personal reasons and to get some direct work experience. However, which between a PT Technician and a medical scribe holds more weight on an application? Although I can see a PT tech being more relevant for PT schools, I'm more interested in scribing as I would get to see and experience more in a hospital setting.

Thanks so much!

It really doesn't matter. If it's not GPA, GRE, or observation hours, the admissions folks won't even look at it. Source: conversation w/ admissions chair.

Both will look great on your application, but you should become a medical scribe. Not too many applicants can say they were a scribe, but many applicants were once PT aides or techs. You need to stand out from your competition.

When does school start? Perhaps one that pays most.

A year off will help you find out what you want to do with your life. Personally I'd say the PT tech/aide is more prepared for PT school. BUT if scribing is an interest you can pursue it as well (or in addition to). This may ultimately lead you into med school. If your concern is money then you will have your answer when the offers are made. FYI - I had a paid PT aide internship and an unpaid Strength Coach internship to choose between. I took the Coaching position. It was a limited opportunity to work with a professional strength coach (NFL,NCAA,NBA). You need to choose what works for you.

I would honestly look for a job that pays more.

I would advise against becoming a scribe unless you're interested in medical school. PT tech will count towards your application and scribing isn't the same as shadowing a DPT. They only pay minimum wage as well - you could get more money for your time at other jobs.
