Is it acceptable to use abbreviations in the essay? (i.e. PT student)

I didn't use abbreviations, because I feel like the essay should be as formal and professional as possible.
Agreed. Formal essays shouldn't have abbreviations.

i spelled out the word and put the abbreviations in parenthesis so i may use the abbreviations later.

I did this as well (like for DPT) to save space later on in the essay.

Yes! 4500 characters may seem like a lot, but I realized last year that it quickly gets used up. Every single word is precious when trying to convey your thoughts.

If you have space, use the word.
If not, use the abbreviations. I am pretty sure the admissions committee understands what PT or DPT mean and are likely more concerned with the general content of the essay.
