ok, I was up way too late last evening and saw a piece on CBS way -late news about basically OMT and results of a study dealing with back pain and manipulation coming out in JAMA this week.

The piece was excellent, the only thing is the study was from PT's and MD's (nothing against either and I know that much of PT training is similar to what we learn in OMT).... I mean they showed several clips of patients being set up for HVLA or other ME techniques , and they even had a few "sound bites" from patients who said the people that treated them were gods.

I'm glad this study is coming out and that it got great press nationally, but it is a shame that it when they showed a close-up of the article's title page that all you could was PT and MD as the authors. I guess many people know that chiropractors "crunch", etc. and now even more people realize PT's and MD's can.

......Anyone else see this, maybe even on regular CBS evening news... and any comments???

PTs have been doing manual therapy for a long time, probably about as long as DOs. I really don't think the MDs were doing it, they were probably just running the study. The real question you should be asking is why haven't DOs put out that kind of research?

yeah, that's my point. Literature is out there and sometimes in "big time" journals. When I was watching the piece, I thought "well, wonder what DO school that study's from?"......then at the end, kinda disappointed

The ironic thing is that although PT's have certainly come up with some manual therapy techniques, they have also learned a lot of manual therapy from DO's. And they aren't afraid to use it.

this is right on and it's scary. PTs are completely capable of manual therapy but it's true that they get a lot of their techniques from DOs. it's important to share knowledge for the benefit of our patients but we can't just dump our patients on everyone else who has the ability to manipulate if we expect to be respected for our skills.

well, we did just blow millions on getting DO's on TV shows... 🙄
