Does anyone have any comments on the reputation of state medical schools, maybe from the perspective of research opportunities, funding and support if/when you decide to specialize?

In general, what do you all think are "top" state medical schools?
 
UMich, UPitt, UIowa, UNC, UAB, and UVa all come to mind right off the bat... there are plenty more in the USNews top 50.

I think all UC med schools are top notch. UCSF, UCLA, and UCSD are all in the top 20 nationally.
 
UTSW (Southwestern) is ranked #17, i believe...very good connections to research ops and also rated quite highly by residency directors.

hee hee, the UC's slipped my mind... I think I was subconciously holding them as private schools because they're so darn out of reach for everyone, even in-staters.

UCSF, UCLA, UCSD, UTSW, UW, UM stand out in my mind.

Well, residents of Pennsylvania get a tuition break and preference in admissions compared to out of staters, so that made them a "public" school in my book. But their hospital is privatized, so I guess they're inbetween? I dunno.

i know they get a very slight tuition break, but i do not believe they get any admissions advantage.

I guess Baylor is public too in terms of tuition and state preference.

Many private schools accept predominantly in-state, even with private tuition however (Stanford, Emory come to mind)

In-staters get a ~25% tuition break (32,168 vs. 24,474). Also, at the interview day, the associate dean of admissions said that in-staters do have an advantage over out-of-staters in admissions, albeit only in terms of getting to the interview stage. After the interview, the chance of acceptance is equal for both groups. However, I don't think the in-state preference is quite as significant as it is at Baylor or Emory.
