I have been researching which schools to apply to, and I see that alot of American schools require public speaking courses. While the Canadian schools don't. But the main school I am applying to does ask to list your skills and it says (first aid, CPR, public speaking, etc). So obviously public speaking is something they would be happy with.

Although I already have a full courseload this semester, 17 hours, (calc, phys, chem and bio), do you think it would be worth it to take a public speaking class too? Even though it's not required?

There is another course too at my school that I think would look great, it's called "Interpersonal skills for the workplace" and the "Core components of the course include verbal and non-verbal communication, conflict resolution, group dynamics, leadership and professional/ethical conduct......instruction in oral presentations, interviews and meetings. "

So I was also thinking this course may help ease the tension about the interview process too.

What do you guys think? The only thing I'm worried about is since I'm not very good at public speaking, I may get a bad grade, that would suck.

If you're not good at public speaking, maybe you should consider it. You will have to give lots of presentations in pharmacy school.

You do? Really? I've never heard that before. What kinds of presentations?

I'm not required to take public speaking either, but I am just because. I think it will be an overall good experience and I'm sure it won't hurt. But I also have an extra spot for a class the semester before I graduate.

How much longer to you have in undergraduate Laura? Maybe PS can be one of those class you'll fit it when you get close to being done if you have time or it can be one of those classes you take if you don't get into pharmacy school the first time around.

You give lots of presentations in pharmacy school. You'll do a lot of them when you are on rotations, too. Public Speaking teaches you the skills that you will need. It's good to get used to speaking in front of large groups. All of my classes, except Dosage Forms, required at least one presentation.

I am applying for the 2005 start. So I have the fall, winter and summer semesters left. But there are only 2 classes I am allowed to take for the summer semester and still be considered.

That's a good idea, I think that's what I'll do.
