How important are publications to being accepted to a good residency/fellowship program? Is there a specific number you should be aiming for. I have two publications so far with two more on the way( first author on 2 and second author on the other 2 publicaitons with 3 of the papers in major journals). I'm extremely interested in applying to internal medicine once i finish med school and applying to a heme/onco fellowship after.

I'm only a med student, so of course take my opinions with a grain of salt. From what I have collected from speaking with interns, residents, and MS-4's, research and publications can only help and are sort of "cherry on the topping" in terms of getting you into a competitive program/fellowship. The more the better in the relevant program you're interested, however, any publication should be considered good. However, if your stats/interview skills suck, I'm not sure how helpful they may be overall. My .02 cents.

One is in a low tier gastroenterology journal the others are in major cancer journals
