I couldn't find my answer using the search function.

Would it be worthwhile to get an article not related to academics published in a national magazine?
 
Probably, unless your article is about how much you hate medicine or something.

What kind of magazine do you have in mind?
 
Assuming it's not just a comment to the editor or something like that and actually a full fledged article, I'd imagine it would go a long way in making you "unique" and appear well-rounded.

I wrote for two publications, news and entertainment. It's been a major conversation topic in interviews and I think it helps differentiate yourself from candidates who have a similar score profile. I'd stress how the communication skills you built are transferable to medicine.
