I was curious if the type of publication, presentation, or abstract matters on residency applications. If I had some publications in a different field other then medicine say, Entomology will waiting for the next cycle, would that matter? It may be easier and quicker then trying to find a lab, get trained and the try for publication. that's why I asked,

Publications are forever and list them all in your CV regardless of the field

Depending on the specialty you’re applying to, you may need specialty specific research. It doesn’t have to be basic science. You can find an attending or clinical research team to work with and pump out clinical papers

Entomology research is something interesting to talk about in interviews and i’ll for sure list that. But you may also need research specific to medicine itself depending on what field you’re applying

So I think it depends on your level of training. If you're a pre-med and just want to learn the ropes of research, then go for it. Pubs last forever as @Lawpy said.

If you're already in med school and you're off playing with bugs... it's going to look weird at best that you're spending your time doing that, and at worst appear that you're trying to game the publication requirement. Once you're already in med school, focus on medical research.
