publications?

hi everyone, i have a question (although i am sure its answered somewhere deep in the extensive archives of this forum):

how important are publications in matching in anesthesiology? i have five publications, 2 as first author, both in clinical neuropharmacology. yet, neither of them are related to anesthesia.

hopefully i nail step 1. nonetheless, do publications raise eyebrows at all in this field?

I had no publications and no anesthesiology research and still matched great.

Publications are great, but it's not any one thing that will tip you over (or if it's about anything IMO, it's networking). It's about the whole package. Five publications might not overcome a weak board score and/or weak grades. Yet a good letter of recommendation can overcome both weak boards and weak grades. A competitive program can choose a candidate with less grades/boards/papers over one with more if they know and really like that candidate. And so on.

I think that research/pubs are always positive features to add to an app. In an area that needs (nay, craves) academicians, any research experience or interest can really help you compete. It wont make your app, and it isnt worth sacrificing 20 points on Step 1 just to write a paper, but it can certainly help.

i knew it was out there. thanks.

p.s. i thought i needed 5 pubs just to get IN to med school, for heaven's sake.
