On the APPIC application, what counts as a publication? My question is, can we count published abstracts as publications? I have several poster presentations at NAN and the abstracts were published in the Archives of Clinical Neuropsychology - which were peer-reviewed. Is this acceptable to list as a publication or is it misleading?

Hmm...I'm not 100% confident in this response, but I believe that you should only include articles which are in press or in print.

Good question. You should ask on the APPIC listserv, as I'm not sure that has come up yet this year. I know people that have 10-15 abstracts published during their grad school years....but I think they split them out from their article publications. Also, as cmuhooligan mentioned....only list things that have been formally accepted, in-press, or are published.

I've heard from several faculty that it is generally perceived as super-sketchy when people list abstracts as publications. Of course, they were not internship directors or APPIC reps so its possible APPIC has a different stance. Generally speaking, the standards and peer-review process is not NEARLY as stringent for abstracts, so it definitely seems like "padding" to count them as pubs.

good info. I definitely don't want to be perceived as "padding" though I know it happens in every facet. I was just wondering if other people were doing this... I don't want to be behind the eight ball you know?

what if you are an undergrad with only a published abstract? you can't divide up sections in that's the only publication you have. 🙁
