What is the difference between pulpectomy and root canal therapy and when would you do a pulpectomy on a perm tooth?

not too sure, but sounds like a question the mods will likley close down.

google, or better yet, a dentist might be of more assistance than this site...sorry.

A pulpectomy is an attempt to stop the pain (usually temperature sensitivity)... basically until RCT can be performed (which actually fixes the problem...)

You can think of a pulpectomy as a "partial" root canal. It involves involves accessing the pulp chamber of a tooth and removing infected and/or inflamed pulp tissue. As previous posters have mentioned, this is frequently performed as a palliative measure to relieve pain caused by the afflicted tooth until the root canal can be completed at a later appointment.

Root canal therapy involves the pulpectomy procedure, followed by cleaning and shaping the root canals, chemically disinfecting the inside of the tooth to kill infectious bacteria, and finally filling the canals with a sealing material to prevent them from becoming reinfected later.

Pulpectomy may be performed as a standalone procedure to relieve pain, but the root canal should be completed as soon as possible thereafter to prevent the recurrence of symptoms.

Pulpotomy: The surgical amputation of the coronal portion of an exposed vital pulp. Usually as a means of preserving the vitality and function of the remaining radicular portion. Indicated in for exposed vital pulps in deciduous teeth and incompletely formed perm teeth, and as an emergency procedure before root canal therapy.

Pulpectomy: Total Removal of the Dental Pulp. Chemical and mechanical treatment, on a biological basis, of the root canal system of teeth to eliminate pulpal and/or periapical diseases and promote healing and repair of periapical tissues.

As from my endo text.

You do pulpectomy if you ran out of master cone/gutta percha. Or if you need to go to lunch break in 5 min but your patient can't wait until you come back from lunch. You basically do half of your root canal and say hey~ i don't have time to finish this, let me just call it pulpectomy, and i will do RCT after lunch. Does it make sense?
