In a field dominated by stuffy, older, white men, please tell me that the new crop of medical students are a bit off the beaten path.

Any punks out there?

Tattoos? (I have 5) Piercings? (I've had 6)
Liking of NOFX, Rise Against, Strike Anywhere, Less Than Jake, Strung Out...

Please tell me that I'll have something in common with at least someone in medical school.

 wow.

Sorry, I already have plans to wear a suit every day to work. I can't wait to be a stuffy old guy. They get the most action.

Edit: PUNK IS DEAD!
2nd Edit: Do you by any chance listen to Against Me? or am I the only one...

Unfortunately punk is a lame form of music, as is the style it engenders. Not as bad as what most people consider emo though... It's definitely not a very unique choice of music either, though I guess it's off the beaten path for people considering medicine?

I don't wanna be burried, in a pet cemetary, I don't want to live my life again.

See, I can't wait to be a crabby old man and carry a wooden spoon with me everywhere...but I was kind of hoping that in medschool I'd at least find someone who didn't suck. Maybe I'm aiming high.

PUNK IS DEAD is just the lamest response ever. Seriously, who says that?

Says the guy who quotes a Ramones song.

This is a hilarious thread.

I'm not a punk, but I'm a dedicated metalhead. We're almost like cousins!

Says the guy who quotes a Ramones song.

It pretty much sums up the value of punk. Ending theme for a stephen king b-movie. 👍

What, you think I quoted it accidentally?

You must be kidding. I think most metalheads would beat you silly for suggesting that... atleast most of the ones I know.

I kid you not. I mean, I'm kidding about the cousins part. But I am into heavy metal, no joke.

Explain a bit how that sums up punk music?

I'm just curious how the line to one song can sum up an entire genre of music. I am actually interested in your opinion, despite the sarcastic nature of the thread.

I don't know if i could call myself punk but i do listen to a lot of indie music ...along with the clash, ramones, iggy pop.

Point of this post is...I am awesome and defy classification into a social group. 👍

Actually calling punk the premature ejaculation of musical genres would be an even more apt description. Don't tell me you also listen to The Locust, too (though they are not usually though of as punk)?

The same guy who says he wants to walk around for the rest of his natural born life in a suit, and then claims old white guys get the most action. Chill out buddy, stop trying to fight the system.

😀

Not trying to fight it, just seeing where I fit in.

Iggy has always freaked me out

I listen to a lot of artists on independent labels but I no longer keep up with the indie scene. Most of the "indie" artists produce music as disposable as anything you would find on MTV, except you'd hear about them on Pitchfork instead.

The clash are actually not bad.

thats kinda sad man...I'm gonna be the doctor in a button down, sneakers and jeans...every day. Hell, maybe even a tshirt if im feeling particularly lazy. 😀

whaaaat? I'm listening to heavy metal right now (okay, just switched over to melodic death metal), and I don't know how you can say we're anywhere near cousins with punk fans. There is very little punk that I can tolerate.

Calmer than you are.

Suits make me feel like the Arab version of James Bond.

Lately my favorite band is categorized as folk-punk... what the hell does that mean?

And about fitting in, there are a whole lot of cool people here, I'm sure there will be a whole lot of cool people in med school too. You shouldn't have a problem.

So you do listen to Against Me.
I thought you were joking.

True...iggy is waaay out there. I agree with you but i think ALL music has become disposable just because the internet decreases the shelf life of a band exponentially. I appreciate all forms of music except country, polka, and rap.

on a side note 80s metal rocks.

You see what I'm talking about? What are you listening to now opeth?

I've never been a huge metal fan but there is some interesting stuff (metallica of course being the exception, i've always liked them). I recently picked up a Mastadon CD.

You ever heard of Mayhem? They are insane.

hahah polka.

Why don't you appreciate country or rap? You can't seriously tell me you don't think johnny cash is a badass?

I'm familiar with Opeth and Mastodon, but I don't have any of their stuff. I'm listening to Soilwork right now. They have an excellent blend of heavy riffs and melodic choruses. I listened to both Master of Puppets and the black album earlier today.

After spending 9 hours in the hospital lab, I have now put on an Against Me CD in your honor.

80's metal question for someone who knows more than me: Why did KISS look so hardcore and crazy, and then play relatively soft music?

I used to be a Metallica fan in high school... that is until they released their latest masterpiece.

:barf: :barf:Frantic tick tick tick tick tick tick tock :barf::barf::barf:

hahah polka.

Oh, come on, Johnny Cash is a serious outlier. You can't assume that because someone dislikes country that they can't appreciate Cash.

Umm...sure...you can think whatever you want to think....

No, actually - MOST med students are pretty interesting people with good sense of humor, although a lot are also high-strung and tend to worry a lot. But they're rarely THAT far off the beaten path, just because if they were, they wouldn't have made it into med school. Plus, they wouldn't have opted to go into medicine, which is a notoriously conservative field.

You can be into punk/heavy metal/whatever, but you have to know when it's okay to be unique and when it's important to blend in. There was a thread some time ago by some guy who wanted to wear his earrings to a med school interview. Several people laboriously worked to get that crazy idea out of his head.

That being said, the chairman of surgery played Black Sabbath on his iPod while digging out some guy's pancreatic tumor the other day. One of the GI doctors routinely references Spinal Tap in his lectures. So, no, not all doctors are boring, stuffy white guys.

And a lot of med students/doctors have good senses of humor...you have to have one if you want to survive working in a hospital with crazy/demanding patients....

You should check out mastadon.

Mayhem have the most f-ed up band history EVER.

You can still be a Metallica fan. Just don't listen to that auditory assault. The only two songs I heard from St. Anger were horrific, so I stick with their older stuff. The S&M album was epic.

thats kinda sad man...I'm gonna be the doctor in a button down, sneakers and jeans...every day. Hell, maybe even a tshirt if im feeling particularly lazy. 😀

like him or not....Houses apparel is somewhat similar and makes doctors appear the exact opposite of those old, white grouchy doctors (although he tends to fit that that description at times) but wear it with pride cuz i plan on trying to do that too👍

hahah polka.

Johnny cash = total badass. I have nearly all his stuff. I think he is just one of those artists that goes beyond the genre. I have some hiphop on my computer but again its stuff that kinda transcends classification.

and in the defense of polka...the chicken dance rocks. 👍

Because they are the emblems of glam rock? Compare to twisted sister. Also what was considered metal back in the day wasn't nearly as aggressive sounding as stuff today as far as I can tell.

Yea S&M was pretty awesome. I saw em live twice and they kicked ass, but I was disheartened when they played St. Anger and the crowd actually went wild. WTF is wrong with people?

Geez....
Classic line-up (1991–1993)

In April 1991, Dead was found dead at the age of 22, having suffered a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head and several lacerations to the wrists, inflicted by a knife he had bought that day. Dead committed suicide in a house he was sharing in Kråkstad with the other members of the band, and left a note saying "Excuse all the blood"[3] Other members of the band claimed it was more extensive, also saying "The knife was too dull to finish the job so I had to use the shotgun." Euronymous was first to discover the body, and took a series of photographs of the corpse, one of which was later stolen and used as cover art for the bootleg album Dawn of the Black Hearts.

According to Occultus, who briefly took position as vocalist after Dead's suicide: "He (Dead) didn't see himself as human; he saw himself as a creature from another world. He said he had many visions that his blood has frozen in his veins, that he was dead. That is the reason he took that name. He knew he would die.."[4]
With a name like Dead, who didn't see this coming?

I just think it's a little extreme to discount an entire genre (except punk). Country is thoroughly american music that overlaps significantly with folk and blues and forms the foundation of rock. Sure the barbecue stain on my white t-shirt BS is terrible but so are most mainstream representations of different musical genres. Personally, I can't think of a whole lot of country of which I am enamored or would play consistently but I'd never think of writing off the genre based on the crap on CMT.

This is the new face of punk.

reinventing Axl Rose

Their best album, hands down. I saw em a few weeks ago and I lost my voice singing Baby, I'm an Anarchist. They only played a 45 minute set though, and most of it was the new crap. booooooo

When it comes to musical taste, a lot apparently.

Sex Pistols anyone?

You just did this with regards to punk?

Granted Punk does not have the history that country music in america does. But it does play a role. And if you are going to discount it, don't use some Good Charlotte criteria.

Sex pistols are the worst. Johnny Rotten is particularly a d-bag. Not as big of a d-bag as sid though.
