Ok, lets say you have an interview that is too far to drive to, at a school that isnt exactly your top choice. So you decide to take the plane, and if u have to fly acroos country, lets say its $500. Now, lets say you don't get a student host and hvae to pay $100 for a hotel and food and stuff adds up to $50. That is $650 total and a whole day of stressing. Sure you get to see new things and check out the schools, but the first half of your interview day would most likely be spent worrying about the interview. So the whole interview process basically boils down to:

The person pays 650 dollars to stress out for one day and check out a building that is not their top choice and none of it would matter if they didn't make the school. And the determining factor for taht is an interview that lasts 30 minutes. 650 dollars for a 30 minute make or break you session and a lot of stress. Just great...

You've just summed up what happens at most interviews (even if you're interested in the school)...well, except it seems like sdners tend to take discount airfare, so it would be more like $450 total. Swallow, remember why you're doing this, and hope you get accepted to a school you want soon.

That sounds about right.

And look, I get to fly to and from Hawaii... more travel time, more expensive!

we should all be so lucky to live in Hawaii lol. Actually, we sdners decided that after this interview process, we are all taking a vacation and crashing at your place. Hope you don't mind.

Awesome! An all out pre-med-I-finished-all-my-interviews-and-now-just-sit-and-wait-for-acceptances-and-credit-card-bills PARTY at my house in Hawaii!! Flop, how come you didn't apply to UH/JABSOM? At least you could've combined an interview with a vacation anyway... and I could've shown you around... 😎

Trust me - I would have LOVED to apply there, however, they have a 5 step residency qualification process that I dont even come close to measuring up to. I have friends that live in Kihei, so I would LOVE to live on the islands!

plane flight across country: $500
hotel for a night: $100
food and other crap: $50
acceptance to medical school: priceless...

all it takes is one acceptance and, unfortunately interviewing is expensive and stressful just like the rest of this process. keep your eye on the prize and eventually this whole process will be nothing but a bad (or good) dream!!

i do feel sorry for you kalenakai, HI is pretty far and expensive! i thought flying everywhere from CA was bad... i just spent 10 days on Kauai, pure heaven every time i go!!
