So I just got back my step 1 score and I got below national average- frankly that's what I was expecting given my practice scores. I would like to go to a big city like NY, Chi, ATL for my residency. I was wondering how I can figure out where I have a decent chance of getting into. Also, what time is the best to schedule away rotations? Any feedback would be great as I am not really sure how to go about finding any information about this.

{erfectly doable, even at an academic center. People will around 200 Step 1 (few points either way) that I know have gotten interviews at big academic centers in major cities (NY, DC) without anything really special to compensate. Best person to ask would be your IM residency director or someone like that. You'll be fine!

Best time for aways is whenever your 4th year starts through around October.
