Q. on getting called off the waitlist

If a school calls you with an acceptance off the waitlist and you are not home, will they leave a message on the answering machine or with someone at home? I can't imagine:

1. Becoming an agoraphobe for 3 months in the fear that I would miss "the" call.

2. Deciding that the milk I had been rationing for the last month had gotten too cheese-like to use, gone to the store, and missing the call while at the store. (or enter whatever life situation that might force you from the 'phone watch').

If they do leave a message, how long do they give for you to call back with your answer?

Jeez!!!! Relax!!!
It's not like they have a 30 second timer for you to call back.

Oh, they'd definitely try calling you back. They've worked hard to figure out who they want in their class, and they won't give up that easily. And they have your email address and your home address and maybe even an alternate phone number . . . so I'm sure they'll try all options. I'm also sure that leaving a message on your answering machine isn't out of the ordinary either.

And calling back to answer . . . I've gotten two wait list offers, and well, one gave me a day (because class was starting in a week) and one gave me two weeks.

I got picked up off a waiting list, and I got home from work to find a message on my answering machine from the Director of Admissions. He said to call him back when I could. Obviously, I couldn't turn off the answering machine fast enough to begin dialing, but he was very polite and told me that I was in. I don't believe that there is a rush, but if you are leaving the country for a week or 2 I would have someone check my messages.

I got accepted off a waitlist the day I was returning from a trip to Germany... they called my house and got no answer, then called my cell phone and left me a message. I was in transit all that day so I had to return the call the following morning, and there was no problem at all. So the moral is, don't be afraid to go buy fresh milk 😉 Good luck!
