Hi all:

I just had my interview at one of my state schools. I had a great interview with one faculty member and with the other one, I thought it went well too. I felt that even if I don't get in this year to my state school, if I re-take MCAT and take some additional classes, my chances are pretty good next time around.

My question is..What IF I get into a out of state school and decide to give that up and wait one more year to see if I can get into one of my state schools. Giving up an admissions offer..is that a bad thing in the eyes of AAMC?

The main reason I will consider doing that is I have a family, a house here. Our in-state tuition is very reasonable and affordable. If I go out of state, its gonna make our lives much much more difficult - financially and socially.

If anyone has any insights into this.. I would appreciate that very much.

Thanks,
S.

You can always defer enrollment at the out-of-state school and apply the next year to the in-state school. This way you have an attractive contingency in case you don't get into the in-state school.
Just a thought.
PS. I love the avatar avatar. That's just clever.

Oh you can do that? Can you defer enrollment at another school and apply next year to the state school? That would be absolutely great. I hope I do get into my state school this year though.

Thank you very much. And thank you for comment about the avatar. I thought I was the only fan of that show - my mental age is lot lower than my real age. 🙂

Take care.

no you can't actually, you'd have to apply through AMCAS and they'd know you've already been accepted somewhere.

Few schools will let you defer enrollment to the next year. If they accept you, and you want to go there, they expect you to enter with the next matriculating class. They are trying to fill spots for a given year, not scatter people across multiple years.

If you really don't want to go out of state (and in your situation I can both understand and empathize), then simply decline any acceptances you get. A letter of intent to your state school, along with letting them know you have declined another offer(s) because you really want to go to their school instead might help.

Oh okay. So what if I reject my acceptance from out-of-state school? I have no admissions offer right now..so this is all hypothetical. I guess my question is .. how would AAMC(AMCAS) and my state school look at this if they see that I was offered an admission and I refused it?

Thanks for your help.

if i get into an out of state school it would force me to sell my house, move my wife and kids to an area they don't know, force my wife to retake the CPA test at $1200 moving away from family forcing kids into daycare so i know EXACTLY where you are coming from. It will be the hardest decision ever. it is one of the reasons i really want to go to DMU. i wish you luck whatever you end up doing and I hope the interview went really well and you get into your state school. maybe consider a letter of intent or something of that nature. god luck!

Makes perfect sense. I feel like it would be dishonest of me to defer an offer and apply to another school. Its like telling a girl that I like you but I want to see if I can find someone better. Okay bad analogy!

If the situation does come to that, I would do exactly what you said. I would meet with my state school's admissions dean and tell him everything honestly. I would write a letter too so that they have that in my file.

Thanks to everyone for replying to my question. You are the best!

Well, I decided to look more thoroughly and you're right. The policies vary by school. Some schools allow you to apply to other schools, others will rescind your spot. I don't know how that impacts the new schools at which one might apply. So much for my bright idea. I don't know how UNC lets you do it, but at UNM I have a friend who did just what the OP suggested - got into a private school and deferred it. The next year he got into UNM and is now an MS1. So, I guess it varies by school.

Thank you. Its great to know people who truly understand my situation. If I were single or even married without kid(s), I wouldn't have appreciated as much as I do now.

In the best case scenario, I might know in couple of weeks about the outcome of today's interview. Thanks again..Best wishes to you too.
