Ruth has gotten 52 hits in 150 at bats. How many hits does she need in her next 100 at bats to have a total average (hits/at bat) of 0.325 ?

a) 29
b) 30
c) 31
d) 32
e) 33

The answer is B. However, I keep getting 29.25 for the answer. I'm not sure how they got 30?!!

I think this is one of those instances where you don't round to the nearest whole, you round up. I'm guessing you were putting A because you rounded 29.25 to 29? However, if the answer was 29, her average would be .324, which is lower than the required average. She would have to make a total of 30 hits to get an average of at LEAST .325.

Oh I see your point. That makes sense. Hopefully we won't get one like this on the actual DAT.

Thank you!

I agree with LightAtTheEnd, and from my standpoint, I reasoned it like this: Ruth cannot bat 29.25 more times in real life. It kind of like if the answer to a problem involved selecting 4.5 pieces of candy out of a jar; if they're all solid pieces of candy, you can't take half a piece out. If Ruth steps up to bat 29 times, she would need to go up 1 more time to get that number up to 29.25, so the total would be 30. I agree though, hopefully the numbers on the DAT won't require us to reason like this.

because you can't have 29.25 hits. no such thing as .25 hits. You either get a hit or you dont. Whole numbers only amigo. 30.
