This is from purple math..

In January of the year 2000, my husband John was eleven times as old as my son William. In January of 2012, he will be three times as old as my son. How old was my son in January of 2000?

J = 11W
J + 12 = 3(W + 12)

Compare this with..

In three more years, Miguel's grandfather will be six times as old as Miguel was last year. When Miguel's present age is added to his grandfather's present age, the total is 68. How old is each one now?

g + 3 = 6(m – 1)
m + g = 68

In this first problem, 12 was added to both sides because they were comparing 2012 to 2000, a difference of 12. In the second problem, there is a difference of 3 years but they only add 3 to the left side. Why is it different?

In the first they are comparing in 12 years to his age in 12 years. In second problem its saying right, in 3 years grandfather will be six times miguel was last year meaning right now a year ago. Yes its a bit confusing but again right now--- g+3 = 6 times how old miguel is a year ago. If today is 2008, yeah. So in 3 years, in 2011 grandfather is 6 times how old miguel is last year which is 2007. Hope that helps.

In the first problem, Both ages were in the year of 2012. Therefore each one is 12 more than the year 2000. However, in the second problem, The grandfathers age is 3 years from now, however when considering Miguel's age, it specifically states "than Miguel was last year". This tells you to only onsider his age last year and not to use the 3 year later age. The question tells oyu what age to use for each one.
