sorry if this has been covered, but for those who've taken step 3...when applying, we can choose any state right? but does it mean that we have to apply for a license in that state? and when matched (fingers-crossed) in a different state, will we then apply for another license in the new state?

with regards to the application itself, it's online and then we just send the notarized cerification of id form right? are there any other documents we need to send...diploma, transcript, etc? or do they verify this with ecfmg (for imgs)?

what states are easiest to apply to...meaning which ones process papers quickly? how long does it take from the time you submit your app to get your permit and eligibility period?

what do you recommend for studying?

i want to get this over with before residency starts...especially since i'm not going into a clinical specialty...sorry for all the questions! i've done a little research, but obviously i'm in the inital stages of applying so i'm a little lost.

thanks for your help! 🙂

Yes, you can apply for any state (doesn't matter where you currently live, or where you're a legal resident, etc.). No, you're not limited in where you obtain a state license afterwards.

It's a weird setup.

I don't know how it works for IMGs.

I believe you're asking two separate questions here. Certain states, like NY, require that you apply for the license as well as the test at the same time. You need to check the state by state requirements to best answer this part of your query. It varies.

Now, once you match for your residency, you will get an interim training license that the program will arrange for you that will allow you to treat patients under the aegis of your hospital/clinic. If you plan on moonlighting outside of your institution (within the constraints of your program allowing you to), then and only then, would you need to apply for that state's license.

Hope this helps,

Nu
