Ok so im and MS1 entering class this fall, and i have full intentions of taking the usmle all the way though steps 1-3, and i wanted to know which steps of comlex im required to take. ill be going to AZCOM for reference. my intentions are to apply to allopathic residencies later on.

Many states uses COMLEX only for DO licensure, so you need to take all of those or you'll significantly limit where you can practice in the future. There is no reason for you to take anything beyond USMLE 2. You won't need it as it'll only be used for residency programs when they're looking at your application.

I assure you that, when the time comes, you will have no intention of taking step 3.

Yep, you're understandibly ignorant on these issues right now, but there is no way you will be taking all 3 steps of the USMLE unless you want to blow some money. You need COMLEX Level 1-3, and maybe USMLE step 1 and maybe maybe USMLE step 2 if applying to a competitive allo residency. Focus on first year, learn the fundementals as best as you can, enjoy life where your only responsibility is to learn.

FAMAN17, I also started a thread on this very same topic (see: COMLEX vs. USMLE thread). I will also be a MS1 at AZCOM so we need to get together and discuss this in the near future. For now, I have decided that everyone that stated to focus on the first two years is correct. Doing the best you can the first two years is the absolute best preparation for the USMLE and COMLEX exams if you plan to take both of them.

Excellent, thank you for the advice! I was just curious as to how the testing was structured, rather than trying to be too far sighted by 'preparing' for the testing schedule. cost of testing was also not an issue, it was more a question of what I needed to take in order to apply for allopathic residencies
