1) Can I apply to schools that I am already waitlisted at/are still considering me for the coming fall? If so, will adcoms be more likely to reject me for the current cycle knowing that I am applying to their school for the next entering class?

This is not a problem.

2) Can I use the same letters of rec that I used from the year before? I know schools vary somewhat on this, but what's the safest route? I've heard something along the lines of having to submit 1 new letter along with the old ones.

For the most part, you can use the same material, and the same application. However, most medical schools won't consider your re-application unless you can show that you've done something to improve yourself since your last application. For example, you've taken additional courses, gained more clnical experience, done research, etc.

Specifically regarding your letters, yes you can reuse them. But before you do, ask your premed advisor if he feels you should get stronger letters. If you end up using the same letters, you might want to add one additional letter that can reflect what you've done to improve yourself this past year.

I don't know whether this needs to be said, but I'll say it anyway. If you're reusing letters, get your writers to update the dates on 'em.

if you reapply for the fall 2006 entering class and submit your AMCAS like in June 2005, that doesn't really give a whole lot of time to improve your application if you are still in the process of applying for the fall 2005 entering class does it?

i guess what i mean is - these two processes are overlapping, so i guess one should wait and submit AMCAS later after he/she has gained more experience, etc than applying early with basically the same application? but doesn't applying later hurt you? 😕

The AMCAS and admissions processes may overlap, but the interviews won't. Find out what got you rejected or waitlisted and work on that. For example, I found out in April of last year that I was rejected for chiefly a lack of volunteer experience. I was out of the country from late May until early July on a mission trip and couldn't get into a hospital to volunteer until mid-August (programs around here required an orientation program before starting). By the time I submitted my AMCAS in mid-August I had included the volunteering on the extracurricular section even though I'd only been doing it for a week, but by the time my interview rolled around (January 13th) I had a whopping 6 months of experience built up.

hey thanks! i still have to hear from some places, but i am just thinking of what i'd do if i had to reapply and what i would do to improve my application...i just don't want to apply too late and have that hurt my chances of getting in the second time. if there even has to be a second time...ahhhhh.
