Edit: This is no troll. I just think these two extreme examples could give insight into the medical school admissions process (possibly even on a school to school basis).

Have you ever wondered how important the MCAT is to medical schools? How about URM?

Well, this cycle I have two fellow applicants who embody the essence of the MCAT and URM

The first is a friend of mine who is actually reapplying. Male and ORM. He got a 41 on the MCAT and has a ~3.76 (great state school). For the extracurriculars, he only filled out 6 work and activities and had 2 most significant, one being research the other being ~100 hours of volunteer he did in high school ( :/ ). 0 clinical experience in college. Essentially, his application is an MCAT score.
Last cycle, he applied MD/PhD last cycle and had three interviews (two MD and 1 MD/PhD). WUSTL (obviously) (MD) , UCSD (MD) , and USC (MD/PhD). This cycle he is only applying MD.

Second friend is born and raised from Nigeria, african american female. Her ECs are also limited (not sure how many exactly). Ridiculous GPA (I'm guessing ~3.9). However, here is the kicker - 30 on the MCAT with a 6 in verbal. We will see if URM can overcome this normally app killing score. She is applying MD.

Stay tuned.

Nice job OP. You somehow managed to merge everything that's terrible about pre-allo and wrapped it up into one thread.

Only true if he's dating the URM because she's dumber than him.

He forgot to mention MD vs DO.

Ok I'll bite.

How do a 3.76/41 ORM and 3.9/30 URM reflect two extreme examples? A 3.9/30 ORM is still going to get in.

It's fine, I have two friends: One in a bottom ranked MD program, the other in a top ranked DO program. We'll see how well they match later this year. 😀

This is SDN, if you don't go to a top 20 you can't even be considered human. So basically you have no friends. Plus, even schools 6-20 are pretty terrible. Top 5 is the only respectable place to be.

Of interest: The 41 has an II from wustl. Pretty sure they do auto invites based on scores.

What about a 3rd friend stuck between DO and the Caribbean? 😕

Since when is a 30 an "app killing score"?

And if she's from a country that speaks a different dialect of English, I don't see why the 6-verbal would be that big of a deal.

Also, if she received a verbal of 6, then I imagine that her BS and PS scores were pretty high.

So how are these "extreme" examples?

A 30 on SDN means Caribbean or DO

But I know a good number of orms that have gotten in with 25-27. It's all about swag.

Or solid ties to a local state school...

OP, you still mad you're not temporarily able to be black this cycle? Let it go brother, let it go 😎

I opened this expecting a URM flame war but all I did was laugh.

I've been dying to ask:

Are you going to blame the fact that you are not black if you don't get into medical school?

Because it seems to me that, with all of your URM posts, you are just setting up the ultimate excuse.

I think the bigger question is why do people keep using black and URM interchangeably as if blacks are the only people who qualify as an URM?

The percentage of Hispanics who get accepted annually under URM status more than double the number of blacks.

:eyebrow: ...

Do you even have to ask?

Because in this case, the OP wishes he was black 👍

Freesia, that was incredibly sexist of you. Almost as much as schools having a significantly higher female acceptance rate than male. Silly female URM qualification getting all these people into medical schools.

:corny:

That "Welcome to the Internet ..." statement makes something inside of me die everytime I read it...especially the "...children are the FBI" part.

Just posting this to describe the uselessness of this thread before the lock.

Would that be your most recent egg? PMS and all...

Being female, I've noticed I really suck at making fun of my own gender. 🙁

I do not believe so. By my calculations, that egg is at it's prime right now😉

The trick is to make it risque enough to make people uncomfortable, but clean enough that you can always look innocent and say "what???" when someone tries to call you out on it.

Like being a lesbian?

"Wow, you have amazing breasts!"

-awkward silence-

"...I wish I had those."
