Hello! 😛
I'm a 3rd year..soon to be 4th year and am starting the process of applying to residencies. Now i know a lot of people have posted things on the competitiveness of residency programs but what I would like to know is which has the best working environment...like:

1)are the residents a good group to work with?
2)Can you have a life outside residency?
3)are the attendings knowledgable/willing to teach?
4)etc.

because as many of you have said it's not just about competitiveness...i'm looking for a well rounded program that has happy residents, learning the most they can out of their residency and attendings who care. So any feedback about which programs have the best working environment? I'm up to go anywhere! Any help is much appreciated🙂

Scutwork and Emramatch are good resources. I am at the University of Mississippi and love it for all of the above reasons. I would bet that a great majority of EM programs will provide a fun group of people to work with, opportunity for life outside of work, and great attending physicians. The nature of our specialty seems to attract personalities that make for a good residency environment, at least it is so at my program and at programs I've rotated through.

I have to say nice things about the El Paso program, lest BKN beat me. Repeat after me: "110 in the summer is not that hot, 110 in the summer is not that hot.....I like cactus snakes and scorpions, they are my friends" :meanie:

Well, they ARE your friends if you like Wilderness medicine stuff. Wouldn't mind catching a scorpion-induced pancreatitis while speaking only in espanol 😎

P.S. Are there really CACTUS SNAKES???? :scared:

Indiana?

How far to the mountains (I live on one)? Skiing( 2 hours)? Subalpine meadows(2 hours)? Wild West History, stomping grounds of Wyatt Earp, Pat Garrett, Billy the Kid, John Wesley Hardin(in town)?

**works himself up to big fib** "110 isn't that hot with 10% humidity" ** then truth** Anyday in the south or midwest with 90 degrees and 90% humidity is a lot worse.

I wish I had some scorpion-induced pancreatitis. Isn't that in Trinidad? Now there would be a great place for a residency!

Mountains? Actual mountains? Probably 4-6 hrs (Smoky Mountains). Skiing? About 2 hrs to Paoli Peaks. Subalpine meadows? Ummm......Colorado is about 18 hrs.... :meanie: Did I mention Charlie Manson got his start at Gibalt School for Boys here?

I agree scorpion-induced pancreatitis would be cool to see. 👍 It would suck to be the patient in that one though. Get anything that interesting and PM me because I'd love to write something like that up.

True....I used to live outside of Tucson and I would take 110 and 10% humidity over even 84F/80% combo we are experiencing right now.

Not that I am aware; that was supposed to be "cactus, snakes".

Speaking from experience, 90/90 is way hotter than 100+/10-20. Especially in terms of the sweat covering your body Index (SCYBI).

Actually haven't you heard? The SCYBI is out.....it didn't stand up to review in new edition of the peer reveiwed journal Just How F--king Hot is is Hot?. The new recommended scale is the AOSCDYA (Amount of Sweat Cascading Down Yo' Asscrack) index 😉

Now that is funny.
