There are two categories, GPA inc and GPA w/o. Can someone explain the difference between the two? Thanks in advance,

i think that what you are looking at is GPA with +/-

for example, a GPA with a B+, A-, C+, is going to be different than the samp GPA without the +/-'s added in (re: B, A, C).

it's wierd, don't sweat it.

you might also notice that the GPA that the AADSAS people figured out is much different from your official university GPA.

If the AADSAS calculated GPA is different from my expection, is it possible for them to correct? Or they might just not want to do any re-evaluation because of heavy load?

Hii,

I was wondering if anyone knows whether the converted GPA is higher or lower than your GPA that appears on your University transcript.... can the converted GPA be lower?????

I was wondering how they calculate your GPA. If you retake a course at a different university than where you received your undergrad, do they replace the grade you received prior with the more recent grade?

All repeated courses are simply treated as an additional course. Unfortunately, there is no way of "removing" a failed course from your GPA calculation. Even if your university allows a repeated course grade to replace the original grade, aadsas will not.

So yes, your university GPA may be higher than your aadsas numbers. Another factor that may have an effect on the conversion is +/- . Aadsas doesn't use +/- so if you are a pretty solid B+ student (~3.25), this will translate to somewhere ~3.0 on your app. (for purposes of aadsas B+=B=B- ) Is this fair? I don't know, but that's the way it is. On the other hand, if you have all A- (~3.75) this will show up as 4.0. 🙂 For most people though, I think it all averages out and your aadsas GPA will be pretty close to your university GPA.

That leaves us with the big question: which do the dental schools use? I mean obviously they have both at their disposal, but when they quote stats on their website and such, which are they referring to?

How about the number grade? In my school, we use 80-100, 70-80.....instead of letter grade. How does AADSAS calculate it? I saw there is a table on the first few pages of the instruction. AADSAS indicates 90-100 = A, 80-90 = B, but in my school (also, this criteria is showed on the transcript), 80-100 = A, 70-80=B......
Would they just use their way or the way my school applies to calcuate the GPA? Thanks!

That really sucks! Do any of those dumb university academic counslers know about the fact that +/- doesn't count for ****? Who hires these people?

Robliski, I don't quite understand. Are you angry with something I said? I think aadsas does need to get both forms of GPA so schools can more fairly compare applicants who went to A,B,C only schools with those who went to +/- schools. I think it's good for the schools to have both at their disposal.

I personally feel that the +/- system is more fair. There is HUGE difference between the kid who screws up one test and gets 89.5% for the class and the kid who was pulling straight C's but got lucky on one test and gets 80.0%. A simple B just doesn't account for the difference in these two students; the +/- system is a far more accurate reflection of performance.

Just wanted to comment - there are bizarre grading systems at some of the schools out there. Where are you, Grettlin? 80-100 = A ? That is just weird. I've also heard of schools that don't assign grades, just a pass/fail with a paragraph or so of comments from the teacher. Schools that only give out percentages - no letter grades. Weird stuff.

Another question related to AADSAS GPA - I don't see any overall GPA after inputing my grades - where can I find this? Thanks...

You'll get the calculated GPA on the confirmation sheet they send you after you submit your application.

Sounds like the Canadian scale. Some schools definitely provide an advantage. I think at Brown University, you can drop a class the week before the final with no W. Talk about convenient And supposedly D's and F's don't show up on transcripts or something crazy like that. Stanford has a similar policy. Some schools are notorious for grade inflation. I both of these schools are famous for it.

Hmm,
Stanford used to have the policy that you could drop a class up until a week before finals, but that ended about 6 years ago. Now their dropping policy is similar to other schools. And D's do show up on the transcript there. I don't know about F's anymore -- they used to not show up (again, 6 years ago), but I think they do now.

It is the scale while I was taking courses at Green River Community College in WA. However, it was 8 years ago. I don't know if they still use this criteria or they have changed to match the policy as most schools. 80-100 - A scale still shows on my Green River transcript.
