Question about abbreviations

Ok, so I've done a search, but didn't come up with anything.

Are the abbreviations M1, M2, etc., pretty standard across schools, i.e., if I use them in my PS or elsewhere in the CV, will attendings know what they mean?

Are the abbreviations M1, M2, etc., pretty standard across schools, i.e., if I use them in my PS or elsewhere in the CV, will attendings know what they mean?

While they're not standard across schools (for example at our school we typically say MSI, MSII, etc.) they're close enough that any doctor who's reading should know what they mean. Is it really that hard to say first year/second year though?
