Question About Acceptance

I have been accepted to my second choice school and, presumably, waitlisted at my first choice school. If I accept the offer from my second choice, will that affect my chances of getting into the first? Can other schools see that you are an accepted applicant?

I’m in the same situation. I paid a deposit at my second choice, and sent an email to my first choice school stating that I was still interested in their school, and giving reasons why.
I don’t think schools can see when someone pays a deposit elsewhere, though.

I think they can see your acceptances March 1 or April 1 but I’m not sure

Sometime around April 15th of each year, schools will drop students that have deposits at more than 1 school, implying that they are aware of where you put down a deposit. Movement on waitlists can sometimes extend into July, but the rule of thumb is in general plan on going where you are accepted, but you never know what can happen last minute.

You are safe to place your deposit where you've been accepted. As soon as you do receive an acceptance to a school higher on your ranking list, put down your deposit and immediately let the other school know you are declining your seat there so they may free it up and send the good news onto some other hopeful soul still waiting for one. You'll lose your deposit, but consider it the fee you pay to toss out risk and get into your top pick school. Don't hold onto more than one seat for longer than a couple days after March or one will get dropped for you.

Last cycle, I put down a deposit for my second choice school because the interview at my top choice wasn’t until mid January so I needed to secure my spot somewhere. Ended up getting into my top choice regardless. You’re fine!

If you have post-Dec interviews, they may ask you if you’ve put down a deposit somewhere, but just to gauge which school they’re competing against for you as a prospective student. Just be honest if they ask! It won’t affect their decision unless you visibly show more interest in the school you’ve put down a deposit for, lol
