Hi everyone,

here is the situation:
During the summer between my junior and senior years in college, I registered for an Orgo 2 class at a community college as a preview for the actual class at my college. The cc course was supposed to be 7 weeks long but in the 3rd week of the course I had an issue at home that ultimately prevented me from further attending the class. (I had a home invasion that led to physical injuries to a family member... yeah...)
At the time I wasn't giving much thought to this class and the outcome of failing to attend that I never withdrew from the class. Now, I haven't gotten the transcript from the cc or anything but I'm sure there is an F sitting there...
Once I went back to my regular college, I did take Orgo 2 and got an obviously better grade, but this cc course situation is always in the back of my head.

Now my question is:
1. will the F grade at cc affect my sGPA, even if I have re/taken the course at my college?
2. will this be a serious blow to my application's quality? I know some people think taking pre-med courses at cc is bad enough, but getting an F... I feel super incompetent.

anyway, thanks for the help!

It's something you'll likely want to address in your secondaries/interviews, but given the situation I wouldn't expect it to count against you much beyond the obvious hit to your GPA. The only way it won't affect your GPA is if you do DO since they do grade replacement (or if, by some miracle, the teacher gave you a W, it's worth checking out at least, it's been a year, suck it up and find out, you might not even have anything to worry about).

Your excuse is a poor one. Unless your relative was terminally ill, there was no reason for you to abandon the class for weeks. I'm also just going to pretend you didn't say you signed up for a class as a preview for a university, because that's ridiculous.

Anyway, you're an adult and if you really needed to be with your relative you should have responsibly handled the situation by withdrawing from the class. Yes, it will show up on your transcript for AMCAS, but not for AACOM if you choose to pursue that. An F is an F, if you can make your GPA decent anyway then it shouldn't present too much of a problem. Just tell them you forgot to withdraw.

Talk to the cc and try to explain to them very nicely what happened. If you suck up enough and they're feeling extremely nice that day then you may get it removed. Otherwise, just explain it in your application. It blows, but its all you can do.

to kcin,
it was my brother, and thankfully, he's still alive and well now, but at the time it just wasn't the ideal situation for me to go to classes while everything was going on, Obviously, I had to be wise and should have thought about the consequences but I can't say that I acted completely irresponsibly.

as the "preview" explanation... haha, I know that sounds silly but I took Orgo 1 during the fall sem of my sophomore year, which means I were to have 3 sem and 2 summers between Orgo 1 and 2. My thinking was that I would take the cc course to somehow bring back the good memories of Orgo 1 before actually taking Orgo 2. In retrospective, I think the first couple of weeks did help, but yeah.

Anyway, thanks for the replies, everyone. I am going to go and check out the situation today... I'm not expecting much but who knows what can happen!

...!

So I just came back from the cc office and the person in charge was totally understanding and told me all he needs is an e-mail statement of what I told him in the office in order to change the grade to "W."

Again, thanks everyone so much for the help! I wasn't even going to do anything about it until now.. I'm so glad I asked here for advices 🙂
