Hello,

I am a 4th year osteopathic student and I will probably be applying to some allopathic residency programs. Most of these programs do not have internships that are "linked" to their residency programs and so I need to apply to preliminary years on my own. From what I understand, the internship that we complete has to be AOA approved. How can I find out which allopathic preliminary years are AOA approved? I can certainly contact the programs individually, but I was wondering if there was a list somewhere. Or are we just required to complete an osteopathic preliminary year? Thank you very much.

Go to www.do-online.org, register your name and then click on "Student Doctor Resources." They will list all of the AOA residencies and internships available. Actually, the internship does not have to be AOA-approved unless you plan on practicing in PA, OH, MI, FL, or OK. I think doing an AOA internship is a better route. First of all, unlike ACGME internships, all you need is a pulse to get your top choice. Second, you are not restricting yourself in what state you would like to practice in. Beware, if you are applying for a reisdency like neurology, they prefer you completing an ACGME-approved internship or prelim year. Contact the residency programs about this.

Good luck
