Hi! This is my first post on this website so this may have been discussed before, but if I'm planning on taking a gap year before applying to optometry schools should I ask my professors for letters of recommendation now (I'm a senior about to graduate), or do I wait until I'm actually applying to contact them and ask? The professors I want to ask all teach very large classes and I'm afraid they might not remember me after I graduate.

I would ask now. They’ll need to submit the letters with your application this year, and it’s better to have them early than wait around.

Sorry, I meant that I'm actually applying next summer (so I guess I'm taking a gap two years?), so is it too early to ask for these letters? Should I just ask them to write them now and save them for when I'm applying?

Ohh I see. That’s a tough one. I might ask them now and explain the situation. It’s best to have a letter while you’re fresh in their minds, especially since things may change over the next year.

Just let them know you'll be applying after your gap year and ask if it'd be ok to contact them at the time. That's what I did and all of mine taught very large classes too

I agree- get their agreement on writing the letters and then remind them about it when you are ready to apply.
