question about applying for specialities

hello all (congratulations to those who just finished part 1!)

I have a question about applying to specialties (ortho in my case)
7 of 11 schools I am applying to do not use PASS
PASS asks for my match code # (for the matching program)
but the other 7 schools' applications do not ask for this #
so when do I tell them it? at the interview?

Perhaps I am wrong, but I got the impression that if the schools do not participate in PASS, then MATCH codes are not necessary. That's why some schools can offer you the position on the spot.

Ortho apps are a friggin pain with all the PASS vs. non-PASS schools out there. To answer your question, some of the non-PASS school apps will ask for the match number. Those that don't will get your number though. Programs can look up candidates on the match system to get your number, or they will just e-mail or ask you for your number.

If they really want you, they will do whatever they need to get that number.

PASS and Match are independent of each other. Although many ortho programs do not participate in the common application supplied by PASS, almost all of them participate in the Match, which means the majority of candidates for ortho will find out where they got in (or if they didn't get in) on the same day at the same time, Dec. 6, 2004.

There are very few non-match ortho programs - Tufts, U. of Rochester, U. of Minnesota are the ones I can think of, there are probably a few more.

Hold up Sleuth, he's not an OMFS person yet! FYI, OMFS residencies does participate in Match process, therefore, student interested in OMFS have to understand the Match process a little bit. ADEA's PASS, we all have to go through.

Just place your match # on your CV that you provide to these non-PASS programs. I believe Rochester asked for this specifically in their application. Griffin is right though, if you are a top choice and they don't have your MATCH #, they will get it for sure. Best of luck with the applications!
