Feb 20th for an audition rotation? My schedule just came out and has kinda screwed me both in when I have do my requirements 4th year and the fact that it JUST F'ING CAME OUT. Anyway, some school are getting filled up pretty quick. Is Feb 20th too late? There's not really a point in interviewing if rank lists are already going to be set.
Also, will a program proactively give me an interview if they see that I'm going to be doing a rotation there?
Thanks.
I'm not going to be quite as pleasant as the other posts, but I think you need some brutally honest information.
February 20th is entirely too late for an audition. Most rank lists are made at the end of January so that programs have time to further mull and chat with applicants and other faculty who know the applicants.
Some programs may offer an interview to those spending a month with them -- the so-called "courtesy interview." It is highly unlikely, however, that simply planning to rotate would get you an interview.
I would make every effort to change your schedule to get an autumn audition rotation if there is a program you're particularly interested in. I would also start the process of applying for that audition; in fact I would start right now. Sometimes that process is very convoluted and can take some time.
I do not want to frighten you, but I also don't want you to be lulled into a sense of false security. Take heart in this: if you are going to graduate from an American allopathic medical school, have an advisor helping you, and are free from significant personality disorders and pathology, you will match in emergency medicine.
Do well in your rotations, spend time in an ED as an acting intern early in your 4th year, and thoughtfully consider how you want to spend the next 3 or 4 years. Good luck!
