This may be a dumb question but please bear with me. I was looking on Barry's website and noticed that it is a "Catholic Institution." I went on to read their mission and it says things such as "Barry University provides opportunities for affirming our Catholic identity, Dominican heritage, and collegiate traditions" and "Through worship and ritual, we celebrate our religious identity while remaining a University community where all are welcome." What I want to know is does Barry try to incorporate religion into their curriculum? I've never been to a school with a religious affiliation so I don't know if they have crosses in all of their lecture halls or if they say prays before classes or things like that. I know it probably has zero effect with regards to my education, but personally, I would rather not have religion pushed in my face everyday. I would appreciate any insight

It has no effect on your education or lifestyle there. I attend Barry, and I also despise religion with a passion. Funny thing is the past 2 colleges I attended before Barry were all Jesuit institutions: Xavier University and Georgetown University. With these schools I saw a lot of priests walking around now and then and they were always nice, but that's about it. There's a church on the campus at all 3 schools. Woopy doo. None of the schools try to push religion on you and the whole "Jesuit" or "Catholic institution" atsmosphere isn't really noticeable. The most pushing Barry does is it has a cross in the lecture halls. I think the religious aspect is more linked to the undergrad where they incorporate bible and religious classes and other such shenanigans into the curriculum, not at the grad level.

Previous poster is right. Religion does not play a role in our education here. I heard a prayer said at the white coat ceremony. But spo01 better be careful with the way he talks about religion...I know that you sit in the front row on the left side. The next rubberbands I shoot at abinash will geared towards your area of the classroom.

Alright, that's good to hear. Not to knock anyone's beliefs but if I had to sit through biochem and then hear people talk about god, I would probably jump into shark infested waters.

You must have me confused, it is I that sits behind you so my spitballs may just happen to be more oriented towards the middle row now lol. Actually I rarely come to class so no worries.

It’s all good Dental Jarry, I would join you in those waters as well. Actually, the president of the 2012 class at Barry is this cool, studly, handsome Mormon and I’ve never heard him or anyone else talk about god during biochem. But after seeing his shot on the basketball court I would encourage him to start praying to god 😀

Come to class so we can fight...and the other indians are not allowed to join in, especially abinash.

Oops...thought you were someone else this whole last year.

I went to BMS at Barry and I do not recall anything religious. I think some classes may have had a cross, and our dean was a nun. That was the only thing I remember. I miss my days at Barry. Orr, and Shaw wow time does fly

ACCEPTED Class of 2014 UCF
GO ARMY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

you may wana consider jumping into that water with the sharks before attending Barry...seriously visit there and other schools and do a thorough comparison...just some advice

haha I will. I just wanted to know if it was religious before I make a trip down there.

How did the living arrangements work down there? did you live in the dorms or get an apartment?

the best thing to do is go to craigs list find a room and then once you get settled you can move.

I would not recommend looking on craigslist to find a place. Many people have had bad experiences. You will be contacted pretty soon on living arrangements and good places to live. The best thing to do out here is to go with a real estate agent to find a place. You can offer less than the asking rent price and get better deals that way and they can find more listings for you than looking on craigslist.
Dorms are not available to graduate students. You will most likely rent an apartment away from campus. Wait a few weeks and you will be receiving lots of info if you paid the deposit to go to Barry.

Hello, I have an interview with Barry at the end of this month and I was wondering for those of you who have been accepted already, how long did it take to receive your acceptance?

It took about 2 weeks to get my acceptance letter. The interview was very casual and everyone was super nice there. Good luck!

When you apply to Barry do you have to send in your letters of recommendation before they will grant you an interview? I know Temple, Des Moines, and OCPM don't require these before granting an interview.

I worked for ResLife when I was at Barry. They host a list of off campus options, but obviously these aren't screened by the university. As was mentioned, you always have to do your homework...

North Miami (esp near Biscayne from circa 115th to 145th st) is nice, close to many things (Barry, groc, restaurants, etc etc) and pretty affordable. Aventura, Sunny Isles, and North Bay Village are also nice but a bit more spendy... maybe good if you will be having a roommate. GL

I'm new to the forums...but... any info on Barry from accepted students or anyone would be greatly appreciated

I am an accepted student to barry. What kind of information are you looking for? PM me if you want to ask any specific questions.

i havent applied yet. but i think i stand a pretty good chance of getting in. i am just really excited because it seems (at least from what i have read) that there are a lot of opportunities to work with "minorities"....bleh i kind of hate that term. but anyway, i kind of have a soft spot in my heart for hispanic people ( i am using that as a general term).

do you guys do volunteer/community outreach clinics on the weekends or anything?

Those opportunities are always available. We have a Hispanic club in the Podiatry school, that students can be a part of, who works with the Hispanic community. There are also many homeless shelter visits we do. The homeless shelters around here love Dentists and Podiatrists. They need to walk and eat to survive. Your heart would be overjoyed with the "majority" hispanic population. There are so many good hispanic food restaurants.

The ceremony would take too long if they talked about each person. I wish it would be quick. This year, I think they are doing a picture slide show to show what went on the first 2 years. Nothing too fancy. Just give me my white coat and let me go. Ours takes place 2 days after boards.
