Question about Biochem..

Hi all,

This upcoming semester, I'm taking my last pre req, biochem. Unfortunately, my school requires you to take the Biochem lecture AND lab despite being separate classes.. All of the med schools I will be applying to next year DO NOT require a biochem lab. I've asked the department if I could just take the lecture portion and they said NO.

What is your opinion on AUDITING biochemistry lab?

As far as I'm aware, auditing a class means you show up but do not get graded nor do you earn credits. Since the college is making you take the lab, presumably you have to take it for credit, no?

I'm not sure about that. I'm just not trying to take a time consuming class that I do not need.

I understand. I would clarify with your school if auditing it is a possibility, but I'm not sure if they'll go for it.

Plenty of applicants do not take biochem lab so I doubt auditing it would have a negative impact on your application. But, I'm not on an adcom so best wait for one of them to chime in.

Honestly the lab course won't be that much more time intensive plus it will help reinforce some of the topics from the lecture component

What's wrong with the biochem lab? A course description will help but imo , it usually deals with enzyme kinetics w/ and w/o various inhibitors, which is pretty fun.

Be sure you can actually audit a lab. Many schools don't allow this (none of mine allowed it).

You do need it as it is a requirement for your school
