I was recently advised on this forum, to start reading "How To Become a Straight-A Student" By Cal Newport. I'm recently halfway through the book, and I have really found his advice to be quite insightful! I'm looking forward to applying all he says to my studies next semester. However, I was wondering, if anybody on this forum has read this book and has it helped them at all? Also, has anyone read his other book "How to win at College?" I was wondering because I was considering buying this book as well, if it has any information that is much different from his book that I am reading right now. If you haven't read any of his books, have any of you come across a book that has helped you improve your study skills and caused you to be more successful in college?

I read them both. Yes I think they helped immensely! I graduate high school with sub-par grades and now I am pretty much the top of my class. "How to win at college" is really an amazing book. A lot of common sense stuff, but if you adhere to it you will be an amazing applicant come to time to apply. Another good book I got my sister for christmas (she is going away for college in the fall) is "1001 things you should know about college." ..its a book with a lot sound advice. Good luck man, I know will do great 👍

I bought both of his books a few years ago based on a recommendation by someone here and I, too, found them useful. Most are "No d'oh" stuff but I still needed someone to tell me...

PS - This is his site and most of the stuff from his books are posted all over this site - http://calnewport.com/blog/

I've read both of his books and visit Study Hacks regularly. His scheduling strategies have really helped me. I feel like some of his tactics aren't geared toward premeds but they're still something to think about.
Someone bought me 1001 Things to Know About College and I really liked it. It's mostly common sense advice but it's a good book to keep handy if you hit a rut and need refreshing.

This is interesting! I didnt think my fellow SDN-ers would know about Cal Newport (Who am I kidding, you guys know EVERYTHING..). I have read his Blog but havent read any of his books yet.

Isint the info. in his books repetitive in regards to the material on his Blog?

The information in the book is more in depth. He sometimes references strategies in the blog and I have to go back to the books to refresh my memory. The guy still wants you to buy his books!

I just happen to come across his blog, as I have been frustrated with my study skills, note taking etc ... So far I have been impressed by what he says in his blog, perhaps I will look and see if the library has his books. 😎

I've read both books and reviewed them on amazon. look for the reviews by dan k DPK. I thought the "Straight A" book was a joke, the "Win at College" book is a little better but it is mostly common sense to the seasoned student.

The book I recommend is Myron Dembo's "Motivation and Learning Strategies for College Success" Learning is about motivation. It's very hard for a straight A student to teach a C student how to get straight A's because the C student is not as motivated as the A student.

Also check out "How to Study" by Ron Fry or "What Smart Students Know" By Adam Robinson.

To me, the Cal Newport books have nice fancy covers but they miss the mark.
