I will be seeing a patient tomorrow for 32 endo. The 32 has been previously instrumented before but the previous operator placed CaOH life in instead of Calxyl (the CaOH medicament). I am just wondering if there is any difference between the 2, and whether it will affect healing since both are calcium hydroxide? Thanks

I'm not familiar with either product, but the activity of CaOH partly depends on how long it can keep the pH stable (bacteriocidal effects and endotoxin inactivation); the difference in going back in there depends on the medium that the CaOH is stabilized in. Some set hard, some don't set, and some are sticky. That affects how easily you can remove the medicament and clean your canals. My primary concern with CaOH would be it's effects on the periradicular tissues and whether it can plug up the dentinal tubules to the point where you cannot clean effectively.
