Hey all, I am currently taking gen chem 1 at my local CC and will be attending the State University this next semester. My advisor is having me take calc 1, bio and a couple of english classes next semester, and due to a variety of circumstances the school is not letting me take any more classes. Is it wise to skip a semester between chem 1 and 2 or would it be a better idea to take them consecutively? Also, if I was to take chem 2 next semester it would have to be at the community college. Since I have already taken chem 1 at a CC I am hesitant to take any more prerequisites there. Do most med schools care about this? Do top schools care? Any advice would be much appreciated.

The concern of taking prerequisites at a CC is that the coursework might not have sufficient rigor to prepare you well for the MCAT. All CCs are not created equal. Some have chem instructors who also teach at a local university and use the same text. Others seem more like HS classes with a slow pace, an easy text, and a high proportion of As in the class. Be wary of the latter.

How to tell the difference: ask the advisor. Look on-line to see if your text is also used at a local 4-year school. Or look at an MCAT prep book and see if you can answer the Gen Chem-related questions as you progress through this term's course.
