Hi, all. I am a third year looking at doing an away rotation in psych in the Chicago area. I was pretty interested in Rush and UIC, but have been told these are in not so safe parts of town. Since I'm a female, and will be staying alone, I'd like to stay safe! Anyone familiar with these programs/the area have any thoughts on this? Do the students/residents at these programs live in the area? Anyone have any ideas on other programs that would be good for an away rotation that might be in safer areas of town? Thanks for any help!

hi medslave,
i'm also applying to away rotations in chicago. coming from new orleans, i know what its like to be a girl and try to stay safe in some really bad neighborhoods. i'm going to do my best to let the program, and not the neighborhood, determine where i do my residency. i've also heard great things about UIC and Northwestern. maybe taking the el to work and staying in a safer neighborhood might be a good option. spending the month in chicago will give you the opportunity to see the neighborhoods of all the programs before you apply. anyway, i hope this is helpful.
