Question about debt for Attendings

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I totally realize that. I'd likely boost the income with some moonlighting out seek out am NHSC location. While it may seem unrealistic, I do have a reputation among my friends and family for being 'extremely cheap' simply because I am frugal. I set a tight budget with my wife and we stick to it. I will live off 3K a month and put the rest toward loans if I have to. That's almost a thousand more pretty month than we live off now with a family of 4. I'm not disagreeing with you. It will be hard. But it's highest priority for my wife and I to get out of debt.

It's not unrealistic. My thing is I lived with no money until I was 40 years old and once I finally had a good income to play with and do some things and travel that I always wanted to do, I went and did it. My student loans are my lowest priority (took me 17 years to pay my undergrad loans) and I made my time with my kids the first priority because I knew I would only have 5-6 more years with them at home. My student loans I can pay after they are gone.

Totally, and completely understandable. Thanks, as always, for your insight cabinbuilder! I've always found your story and your path less traveled (like working only locums) quite inspiring!

WTF is that?
hahah thats definitely the response by a lot of people. You are a therapist/counselor but you are basically not limited to just vocal dialogues to help people, you are trained to used various forms of art to help clients/patients as well. Some psychoanalytic art therapists also use art as a diagnostic tool; so like people who have had certain traumas (rape/PTSD/etc) in their life tend to subconsciously reflect certain patterns/shapes/colors into their artwork, which can be used by the art therapist as a springboard to help in treatment. Its a relatively up and coming field.

The big problem for my wife and I is that the licensing varies dramatically state by state. So like in any state she could be a counselor once she is done school. But it is hard to find a place where I get into a school, I like the school, and she can actually legally practice art therapy. Some states, like Delaware for instance, pretty much just have a test that she would have to pass (after she finishes her masters degree) and then she is good to go - she could practice in hospitals, VAs, schools, treatment centers, etc. Other states, like Florida for instance, she would have to get like 2000 hours of further training, imagine residency but you get paid a lot less and have to PAY your program directors to give you supervision time, then take like 2 big tests, and even then she would only be allowed to practice in like schools essentially as an art teacher, which is literally the opposite of what an art therapist is haha... so needless to say NSU is a last resort haha.

Its a tricky business...
