I haven't applied yet, but I have a question about adding references in the AMCAS. I've been Vice-president of a club for 3 years, and I'm wondering what person to put in for reference. There have been two presidents in that 3-year span: should I put in both? Or someone else? Also, I've worked as a volunteer in a vet clinic in the summer of 2009 but the veterinarian has since left and I don't know how to contact him. Any suggestions?

Sorry if this question is rather silly, but any help will be appreciated. 🙂

1. Is there any faculty member associated with the club (I'm assuming it is related to college)? If so, he/she is the best person to list. Otherwise, you can definitely include one of the president (the latter one would be better).

2. Does the clinic still exist or was it his private practice? If the clinic still exists, you can always list one of the administrators at the clinic and mention your previous experience there to them. Otherwise, it is best if you try and figure out where this vet is. If all else fails, you can list yourself but that is not ideal.

LizzyM has indicated, in her "ask me anything" post, that if you list yourself as the contact for an extracurricular activity, 99% of the time (she said never in her case) no one will raise an eyebrow. I suggest you simply put yourself as the contact.

Keep in mind that you are listing a contact who can confirm your time of involvement, not so that adcomms can get a reference. If any person in the vet clinic would recall you (maybe after you jog their memory), that would be a better option than listing yourself for something like this. A family member or co-volunteer would be another option.

Alternatively, you might be able to get contact info for the vet through a site like this one: http://veterinarian-pages.com/#country=USA or through your state's Veterinary Medical Association.

1. No faculty member. I guess I'll list the current president, then.
2. The clinic still exists. I know some people that I can contact that might still be around, so I'll ask them.

Thanks!

If this is the case, that's something less that I have to worry about.

Thank you, I haven't thought of that. I know some people who were also volunteers there that I might ask, thanks!
Unfortunately, the vet clinic is in Bolivia so it's more difficult to find the veterinarian.

I have another question though... Some of my references don't know English. What do I do about that?
