Hi SDN,

So I might be kind of in a pickle right now. I will be starting med school in the fall, and I have submitted my FAFSA and need-based forms for my schools. My parents suddenly tell me today (the day before taxes are due) that I need to change my status as a dependent (I filed as an independent for 2012 taxes a few months ago). Long story short, my parents have filed for an extension and I will mail in an amendment to the IRS (which will take 2 months+ to process).

What I am most concerned about is that I have already submitted my FAFSA and need-based applications based on the forms my parents gave me in addition to my own tax returns. The dependency status of the forms, in other words, are inconsistent. However, the numbers/wages should all be the same. Is this going to be a big problem in terms of getting packaged for financial aid?

Thank for reading and I would appreciate any input.

bump.. anyone?? 🙁

The financial aid office of your school will be better able to field this question than SDN, if I had to guess.

I don't think you to change your status on your IRS. Your parents' info will be considered whether or nor you are independent. But if have questions call your school's fin aid office or FAFSA directly.

Dependent status should not change your FAFSA loan eligibility when you apply for graduate school loans so don't worry.

Your needbased forms to the school already include your parental information so it will change nothing in those calculations as well.

If you're really freaking out about it for some reason call the school's fin aid office and tell them what happen. It won't do anything to affect your fin aid package though as your school already considers your parent's info unless you're like 30 so they never considered you independent in the fist place.
