As I understand it, even if a class is retaken and a higher grade is earned, the AMCAS integrates BOTH grades earned (ie, the original is not replaced by the new) into their calculation. I've looked for similar information from AACOM, and cannot find it.

Basically, there are some classes I would like to re-take (I'm a non-trad), and if I go to my original undergrad university and retake them, the new grade completely replaces the old one (regardless if it's higher or lower) in the GPA calculation, but the old record is still reported on the transcript..

I'm wondering if it would behoove me to go back to my original, and very expensive, undergrad institution to re-take these classes at this point in order to raise my GPA, or if it even matters to the powers that be.

Can someone help me out with this one?

Also, when they complete your "science" GPA scores, is it ONLY for the core classes required for admission, or is it for your "overall" science classes taken?

I was a BIO major so I have a bunch of Bio classes (botany, ecology, comparative Phys., Comparative Anat., Etc.) that aren't pre-reqs, and I wonder how these figure in.

Thanks for any help in advance. 🙂

1. AACOMAS takes the most recent grade in a repeated class.

2. All Bio/Chem/Math/Physics classes are counted for your science GPA, regardless of what course they are.

Thank you for the help.

Can you tell me if they take the most recent grade regardless of institution or if it has to be from your original undergrad institution?

I'm basically thinking of taking virtually all of my pre-reqs over again, mostly because it's been almost 10 years since I took them anyway, but if I have to take them from the original institution, it will be very expensive, and will require a move.

Are you sure about math counting in AACOMAS science gpa? I know you are already a med student and I am just pre med, but I always thought that they didn't include math in this calculation. If math is included would classes like business statistics count? What about accounting, finance, & economics classes? Do these count as math if math is included into the science GPA?

From https://aacomas.aacom.org/html/ins_sess_ac.htm :
"Non-science would include courses with subjects of Math, English, Behavioral Sciences, and Non-science."

Also:

Math

Behavioral Statistics
Biostatistics
Chemical Math
Computer Science
Math

Thank you for the link, that definitely puts all doubt in my mind to rest!

I am in a similar situation. Per my premed advisor you can repeat a prereq at any institution (preferably a 4-yr). The DO adcom will see the previous attempts, but for the purposes of GPA calc only the most recent will be factored in. If you bailed on some classes as a freshman (like me) and then repeat for an A the GPA increases nicely.

As far as I know, the institution doesn't matter. Bear in mind that your other grades will be seen, but they won't be factored into your GPA.
