So I recently found out that for applying to Osteopathic Med School there is such a thing called "grade forgiveness".

So essentially does this mean if a person received C in a class, repeated it and their new grade was an A, the gpa computation only calculates the A? I am aware that both grades will appear.

I am also assuming that the grade that is calculated would be the newer grade (regardless of it being higher or even lower of the previous grade?)

I ask because I'm trying to boost my GPA, and the reason why my gpa isn't so great is because of the string of C grades that I received earlier in my education career. I found out that no matter how many A's and B+'s one receives it is very very difficult to pull up the gpa.

Thanks in advance. I'm still quite new to these forums so I apologize if there is already a detailed thread.

Yes. Yes.

Yes that is the nice thing about the DO calculation. It brought my overall GPA up 0.2 and my science went up 0.3 points. That doesn't sound like much but anything that takes you from below 3.5 to above 3.5 is advantageous.

I did not even know about the DO calculation until I was actually applying so I had only retaken courses for my benefit or due to a long gap in my education. I am now very glad I retook certain courses. The classes did not even have to be at the same institution, which is very good for those of us who are non-traditional and took courses at more than one location.

And even more advantageous if it takes you above a 3.00.

Yup. It's nice because that's how my UG handled retakes as well.

I have a question for your general thoughts. i have my own and want to make sure I am not way off base. What is your considered opion ? student 27 yo under 2.75 GPA has masters but was only able to complete by repeating some classes. Is in their second cycle without any interview invites. MCAT 20 is highest of 2 attempts.
Now wants to go back to undergraduate for grade replacement.
My opion which isn't going far is that their odds are about the same as winning the lottery; I advised them to keep their current job in a health related field since they are making about 18 an hour.
Your considered opinions are appreciated. Thank you

I would have to know how they studied for the MCAT. The grade replacement is a good option for many students but I'm not sure if this person did not do well because they did not try or because they had trouble with the material.

If they just did not try, there is still time and hope for turning it around. On the other hand, if they have been giving their best effort all along, I would think they may not be capable of handling the pace of medical school.

I get the feeling that you think this person might not be able to succeed in medical school. You could be right but it would be impossible for any of us to know better than you, because we have never met him. I have met people with low MCAT scores who made it through medical school but those people usually planned to retake it and just never did because they ended up getting accepted before the retake. However, they all did well in undergraduate courses and just messed up on the test once.

If you are looking for someone to support your opinion and advise this person to reconsider medical school, it would be best to find other people who know this person well. People who know his academic abilities and would be honest about letting him know if they thought he would be able to keep up with the pace of medical school.

Speaking as a person who has tutored students with disabilities, I have never had a student who I felt was unable to learn the material in the classes that they were taking. However, I have had students who were unable to learn at the same pace as the class. Unfortunately, medical school is not really designed for people to learn at their own pace. Therefore, some students are just not going to be able to succeed in medical school even if they are capable of learning the material.
