I just graduated this past may with a B.A in math. My overall was a 2.93 but I did pretty poorly in the upper level math classes like modern algebra, real analysis, etc. so my science gpa as listed on my undergrad transcript is like a 2.3. I didn't take any of the science pre-reqs so I'm taking those in a post-bac program at UMass this year and next. My first question is are those upper level math classes going to be considered as "science" classes when it comes time to apply and secondly, if I do very well in bio, chem, and physics do you think that will offset some of the other poor math grades in got in undergrad? I'm really interested in dental school and I'm trying to contact dentists to shadow right now. Is there anything else I can get in to that will make my application look better .....

By the way, I'm planning to study my *** off and get at least a 3.5 in these science classes...I'm just a little nervous about my undergrad upper level math classes brining the whole science gpa down

All math classes are counted in the science GPA, so if a school were to just look at the reported science GPA I would say that you were out of luck. I would suggest an additional letter to each adcom mentioning your situation and then hopefully they would look more carefully at your application. Some schools tend to more holistic when it comes to applications where others tend to be strictly by the numbers. In any case study hard and leave it up to the schools to be jerks or not.

That's the right attitude. Yes, all of those horrid math courses will be factored into your science gpa. But keep in mind that AADSAS will also calculate a BCP (biology, chemistry, physics only) gpa. If you do well in your pre-reqs adcoms can gauge your performance in that area of study and see that the trend in your math courses is not a reliable indicator of your future success.
